What Is It? Week 2

This week for macro I shot my friend's tiny owl made out of dried plant/wood. I shot with a D700, 105 mm macro lens, at ISO 200, f/22, 1/6 under halo lights.

This is an antique light meter that I have. I shot it with a D700, 105 mm macro lens, at ISO 200, f/22, 1/4.

I had never used the 105 mm macro lens and I had also never used the halo lights before. This week I really wanted to branch away from using the 60 mm macro since I've used it so much in the past.

Magnification Ratios

In Macro this week, we had an assignment to pick an object and shoot it at different magnification ratios, starting at 1:10 and ending at 1:1. This is a layout I did using all 10 images. Click on the image to see it in a larger view. Thanks to all the other photo students who contributed advice on how to comfortably fit all 10 into one layout! That was a challenge.

Fingerprint

Shooting macro really makes me look at things a lot differently. There are so many weird textures and designs in things we don't even think of. Fingerprints look so much more pronounced up close.

This semester I am taking Macro Photography and for our first assignment we were just supposed to shoot 2-3 images using the macro equipment we had just been checked out on. I caught some interference on the back of this CD. Using the Macro equipment is a challenge, and technically speaking, very different than shooting regular sized things. There were a lot of problems that I discovered just from experimenting. I am glad we did this assignment, because it was important for me to discover what I needed to look out for in the future.

This was shot with a D300, and a 60 mm, at a 1:1 ratio. I shot with two 750 hot lights.

Sushi

This is the last picture I shot for my object lighting class. I wanted to do another food shoot, but with something prepared instead of fresh food, which is what I had done before. I had a lot of fun with this shoot, and the sushi was absolutely delicious!

Outdoor Portrait

You might remember Clayton from another post I did. I had the pleasure of working with him again for my portrait portfolio. I wanted to do just a casual, outdoor portrait of him at his house.

This was shot with a D300, 80-200mm lens, at ISO 400, at 1/80 and f/4.

Fresh Food

This is another picture I shot for my Biocommunications Object Lighting portfolio. I have become really interested in photographing food. For some reason, in a design sense, food really speaks to me. I'm really looking forward to shooting food more often, and want to start trying more studio setups to look like a kitchen or dinner table. I also want to shoot some simple prepared food.



This is a picture of my setup. The fork and tomato are between the two white boards. I held the fork up vertically with a large studio clamp. I originally wanted a white background (hence the white backdrop,but found that I liked it better on the black background because it made both the metal and the color of the tomato pop.

I used a Nikon D300, 60mm macro lens, at ISO 200, 1/50 sec., and f/29.
